Spirit of Woman partners with schools to work with their visual arts students, creating dedicated classes focused on developing artwork around domestic violence (DV) with the guiding question: “What does a loving community look like?” for community engagement or gallery submission. This initiative provides students with the opportunity to showcase their creativity in a meaningful context, connecting their artistic skills with a wider audience.

Communities – The Heart of Love

Presented by Spirit of Woman in support of The Place of Courage

Are you ready to use your art to celebrate love, connection, and courage?

Spirit of Woman invites visual artists from schools and the community to submit work for our upcoming exhibition,
Belonging to Loving Communities — a powerful exploration of how we find and create belonging in all its beautiful, diverse forms.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking 2D artworks — paintings, drawings, photography, or mixed media — that reflect what it means to belong:
to be seen, valued, and loved within your community.

Here, community is defined broadly and inclusively — embracing LGBTQIA+ communities, multicultural and extended networks, families of choice, circles of friendship, and all intersections of identity and experience.

We encourage artists to approach the theme through an intersectional lens, celebrating the many ways love and connection shape our lives.

Submission Details

Each submission should include:

  • Your artwork (2D visual work: painting, drawing, photography, or mixed media)

  • A short artist statement describing the inspiration behind your piece and how it connects to the theme of belonging

Exhibition & Recognition

Selected works will be showcased in a public exhibition (subject to health and safety guidelines) and featured in our online gallery.

Outstanding artists will also be spotlighted through:

  • Articles and interviews

  • Promotional features celebrating creativity, storytelling, and community resilience

Why get involved?

Spirit of Woman is a growing community of advocates dedicated to building a movement of social change that shines a light on domestic and family violence (DFV) in our society.

The art exhibition will also be a source of fundraising for The Place of Courage, Australia’s first public commemorative art space to the victims and survivors of DFV.
